Yo, I'm Charles
Here's what I believe, all the way down: belief drives behavior. I learned that the hard way, bused across town as a kid, one early failure that turned into a label ("the bad kid"), years of picking detention over feeling like a misfit.
The Marine Corps gave me a version of myself I actually respected — structure, discipline, I rose, I led. Then a string of injuries ended my time in uniform, and the man who could lead a platoon couldn't lead his own house: bad money decisions, debt I didn't know how to talk about, a quiet PTSD and anxiety diagnosis, and two sons who could feel what I couldn't say, down to how hard it got just to hug them.

It took me years to say this part out loud: nothing was wrong with me. I was still running on a belief I picked up as a kid in detention — that I had to earn my place, and that real connection was a risk I couldn't afford. Naming it let me examine it. Examining it let me change it.
